Heart Blossoms
A couple of
months ago a friend sent me a clipping from her local newspaper. It talked about a place called SprirtHorse. This is a place where kids of all ages can
go and ride horses. The unique thing
about this magical place is that they only serve special needs kids. This sparked my interest as I had
volunteered at a similar place in Kansas and delighted in seeing the kids make
amazing progress as they worked with horses.
The next day I
called the Director of the program to inquire if they needed volunteers. He said, “Yes”. So, I paid a visit.
While there, I met a Mom who has three special needs kids. The Director said I could be very helpful by
coming in while these three children took their lessons. This way, I could supervise two children
while their Mom watched the third child take his/her lesson. I jumped at this opportunity.
The following
week I showed up to help out. Abby, who
is five, was not too keen on my assistance.
At one point she pushed me and said, “No!” I persisted in my efforts to entertain her while her sibling took
his lesson. We talked, collected leaves
and I pushed her in a swing. I marveled
at how she would examine the tiniest detail in the sand and on the leaves. When I pushed her in the swing, she would
gaze up into the trees and get a huge smile on her face. It was delightful to watch this beautiful
child be so fully in the present moment.
Soon our time
together was up. Abby was in her
mother’s arms as we said, “Goodbyes.”
You can imagine my surprise when she put her arms out to me for a
hug! We hugged and she was off with her
Mom. As I watched them walk away my
heart blossomed in full. I felt truly
blessed to have the opportunity to spend time with this special little
girl. She modeled so beautifully the
delight we can experience when we fully enjoy every moment.

Horse Trivia
Some people think it is cute when a horse rubs on them. They see it as a sign of affection. The truth is that the horse is trying to establish him/herself higher than you in the pecking order. I do not allow my horses to rub on me. Of course I rub on them. It is nice to be the Boss Mare!
