Seeing “Good” in a Bad Situation

The other day I ran over something in the road and my tire went flat.  Fortunately I was in the parking lot of our local post office, so I just pulled into an out-of –the-way parking spot.  I called AAA and they said they would be there in 45 minutes or less.  The repairman arrived 45 minutes later.

Unfortunately, when he took my spare tire out of the trunk we could not find the special bolts that went with the spare.  I called Mercedes Benz Roadside Assistance.  They explained that it was dangerous to use any bolts but those specifically made for the spare.  Consequently they would have to send one of their people out with the bolts.  This would require another hour wait.

As you can imagine, I was starting to get very frustrated and could feel my blood pressure rising.  It was a beautiful sunny day and I said to myself, “It is a beautiful day and I can just enjoy it as I wait.”  I took a deep breath and started pondering why I had gotten the flat.  The following is a list of the gifts that showed up that day.

1.      Three separate men stopped to see if I was all right and asked if they could help me in any way.  This renewed my faith in the generosity of my fellow man.

2.      The repairman arrived an hour later and pointed out that the tread on my tires was getting pretty low.  He suggested that I get new tires soon.  Wow, I thought, maybe I just avoided a bad accident.

3.      The repairman let me know that I can request a mobile repair service for “A” schedule service.  They will come to my home or business and perform this service at no additional charge. (Finding out about this benefit was worth getting a flat.)

4.      The repairman showed me features of my car that I was not aware of and helped me find my favorite radio stations and programmed them into numbers that I can just push to get to that station.  (I hadn’t changed them since we moved to Texas last fall.)

5.      When I arrived at Goodyear Tire, they informed me that they were having a tire sale.  I saved $290 on my tire purchase.  They also gave me “road hazard” protection and I get my tires rotated and balanced at no charge every 5,000 miles.

As I reflect back on what appeared to be a bad situation, I am amazed at how many gifts showed up.    My five gifts were wrapped in a package of a flat tire.  My challenge to you this month is to take a deep breath when it feels like something bad is happening to you.  Experiment with seeing the gifts that come wrapped in strange packages.  You’ll be glad you did!

Horse Trivia

When a horse turns his/her rump to you or another horse, it is a sign of disrespect.  If you do nothing about it, the horse has established dominance over you.  This is why I consistently work on having the horse face me and then I turn and walk away from the horse.  As Ray Hunt says, “I’m in charge of this outfit!” (Ray Hunt is a famous horse trainer.) It is my responsibility as the leader of my horse to speak to him in language that he understands.
