 What Is Your BrainStyle?

The first time I heard this term, I was intrigued.   Just the sound of it made me want to hear more!  A coaching colleague met me for lunch to tell me more about this system.   She started off by saying that this system helps people to focus on their strengths and not their weaknesses.  As a matter of fact, the word weakness is not mentioned here.  Rather, one is encouraged to find ways to collaborate with others who have strengths in the area of one’s non-strengths.

She further stated that this system encourages someone to be more of who they naturally are!  This idea took a few minutes to soak in.  I had been in the corporate environment for 18 plus years.  I remembered many performance reviews where my manager encouraged me to improve my weaknesses!  I also remembered that this often led to much effort on my part since the areas that needed improvement were those in which I did not have natural talent.

Suddenly I was filled with excitement imagining the possibilities available to us when we have permission to develop our strengths!  So excited in fact, that I signed up to take a class to become certified as a coach/instructor for The BrainStyles System.  Becoming certified increased my excitement for this way of relating to others.  It was so much fun to look beyond my husband’s behavior and see his gifts!   He and I process information differently and all I have to do is adjust my own timing when we communicate.  We now argue much less frequently!  And as we have each recognized what our natural gifts are, we are able to complete projects more quickly and with less effort!

Be More OF Yourself

  1. Give yourself permission to embrace what you do naturally well.  As you give yourself permission to focus on your strengths you are able to give others the best of you!  And you’ll notice that you become a role model for others to embrace their unique talents.
  2. Give others permission to do what they do naturally well.  When you are able to fully recognize how you can contribute maximally, you automatically allow others to do the same.
  3. Look beyond the behavior and see the gift.  This goes back to the idea of,  “what we focus on grows”.  As you focus on the talent and abilities others have to offer, your focus on irritating behaviors diminishes.
  4. Identify ways you can collaborate with others to get things done more quickly and with less effort.  When I started my business I realized that I had to keep accounting books.  After struggling with QuickBooks, I realized that is not where my effort is best spent.  I hired a bookkeeper and she is able to update my books in about one-eighth of the time it took me.  This frees me up to do what I do well.

This month experiment with being even more you.  I would love to hear from you about what insights you are having as you practice giving yourself permission to offer your unique talents in life.  E-mail me at: CoachDessie@earthlink.net
